Early Colleges Prominade Ball

Open Letter to CSEC Parents about the CSEC Promenade Ball

Long ago there was something called a Promenade Ball.  Typically this was an event where young ladies would be introduced to the adult community as having come of age; showing themselves ready to join the adult community in terms of service and commitment to their community.  At this event, the young lady would appear in public with her hair done up quite nicely, wearing a long flowing gown.  She would come to the doorway of a large elegant hall, be introduced one at a time, and be escorted to her seat at a dinner table.  It was an elegant evening filled with a great deal of pomp and circumstance.

Over the years, this ball has been shortened to “Prom”, and along with the shortening of the name came a shortening of the experience as well.  In most schools, it is a time for high revelry instead of high elegance.

Well, we at CSEC would prefer to resurrect the true sense of elegance, chivalry, pomp and circumstance of the real Promenade Ball.  To accomplish this we have created a Promenade Ball Committee which is led by our Executive Assistant, Sandi Brown and our Fitness Instructor, Julie Dunham.  We have already asked a few students to join us on this committee, and together they have made significant progress.  In fact, they have already made the following decisions:

The CSEC Promenade Ball will:

  • 1)     Be open to all students who attend CSEC.
  • 2)     Be open to guests.  Our students may invite a guest to the Ball, but that guest must be approved by our

student’s parents, the guest’s home school, and by our administration.

  • 3)     Begin with all of our ladies being introduced at the door and escorted to their table by either their guest, or

a gentleman selected by our school.

  • 4)     Be an elegant evening, with ladies wearing gowns, and gentlemen wearing tuxedos or suits.
  • 5)     Begin with a formal dinner, followed by ballroom dancing, and end with a switch to contemporary dance music.
  • 6)     Be held at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort, on April 26th, from 6:30 PM until 11:30 PM.
  • 7)     Cost $50 per person to attend, which includes the cost of the dinner and all entertainment provided at the event.
  • 8)     Be open to single ladies and single gentlemen to attend whether they choose to bring a guest or not.
  • 9)     Be an opportunity for us to recognize and honor our graduating Seniors.

The CSEC Promenade Ball will NOT:

  • 1)     Be a date night.  Ladies may choose to come with a gentleman to the Ball, who may escort her to her table, and even join her for dinner and dancing.  However, when the Ball is over, we expect the evening to end and the Lady will be escorted home immediately after the event.
  • 2)     Be a “Party”, but rather a formal dinner and dance, a celebration.

Our next step is to invite PARENTS to join our committee.  We need parents to help us make appropriate decisions for this Ball.  We also need parents to volunteer to be chaperones, to help us gather raffle items, and to help with decorations.   Parents, please help us.  Please!

And Parents, please come to the Ball.  Come and take pictures of your students dressed so very formally and behaving with such amazing charm.

To volunteer, please contact Sandi Brown at 955-4694 or via email at sbrown@coloradotech.edu

Warm regards,

- Glenn Englund, Academic Dean

Accuplacer Testing

Accuplacer is a test that is used by colleges and universities to place students appropriately into classes within their institutions.  The Colorado Springs Early Colleges is using this test for the very same purpose.

The test is typically given to high school graduates as they are applying for admission to a college or university.  Given the fact that we are giving this test to students who have not yet graduated high school, there should be no expectations that our students would test even close to college ready.  Yet surprisingly, many of our students did just that - even some students in the 9th grade!

The Accuplacer Test is NOT an entrance exam for students entering our school as a Freshman or Sophomore.  It is simply used to tell us where to place you in our high school classes.  And remember, through the use of Seamless Instruction, regardless of where we place them, our students will be able to progress through the curriculum as fast as they can master the material.

Here's how to interpret the test scores:

Math:

Arithmetic Score of 56 of less - you should start in Math 030

Elementary Algebra Score of 44 or less - you should start in 060

Elementary Algebra Score of 45 to 84 - you schould start in 090

An Elementary Algebra Score of 85+ and a College Level Math (CLM) Score of 0 to 60 - You are College Ready!

English:

A Reading Score of 39 or less and a Sentence Skills Score of 49 or less - you should start in English 030

A Reading Score of 40 to 61 and a Sentence Skills Score of 50 to 69 - you should start in English 060

A Reading Score of 62 to 79 and a Sentences Skills Score of 70 to 94 - you should start in English 090

A Reading Score of 80+ and a Sentence Skills Score of 95+ -  You are College Ready!

In order to do well on the Accuplacer test, you may wish to try one of more of the practice tests.  They may be found online by going to these links:
