CSEC Intervention Program

Our mission at Colorado Springs Early Colleges is to ensure that all students learn at high levels. We recognize that students learn at different rates and that most students will struggle with material at some point in their four years. We have several structures and processes in place to support students who are struggling:

Teacher Tutoring/Intervention: Nearly all CSEC teachers make themselves available before or after school and/or at lunch to provide additional help to students who need it. The teacher’s availability will depend on his/her personal and school-related commitments, so please make arrangements with teachers in advance if you need help or have questions. Teachers are most readily available by email.

Academic Assistants:
CSEC hires three Academic Assistants to work throughout the school year to help with student academic achievement. The Academic Assistants of CSEC reports directly to the Academic Deanand then to the teacher they have been assigned to help. The role of the Academic Assistant is critical to the accomplishment of its mission.

Learning Specialist
: This department assesses and facilitates meetings and implements programs for students who have high needs, i.e., Special Education, Gifted and Talented and 504 Plans for disabilities of all kinds.  Once assessed, students are served in accordance to their needs with special programming along with assisting teachers to make accommodations in the general classroom.  Students are served in the general classroom, in small groups and individually according to their needs.

Enrichment Session (Mandatory during School Tutoring):
Because we recognize that completion of all assignments, or students who need extended time to understand a new concept, is crucial to students’ success, we make every effort to ensure that students have the opportunity to succeed. The CSEC Enrichment Sessions is a proactive tutoring program designed to serve CSEC students’ attending the college prep courses. The intent of the program is to serve, in a proactive immediate initiative, all college prep students attending CSEC. Students who qualify for the Enrichment Sessions include those who are not turning in homework, not completing in class assignments, or need extra time understanding a concept. Students attending the CSEC Enrichment Sessions will be given a small group setting offered Monday through Friday during the two lunch periods. The Enrichment Sessions will be teacher initiated with completion of a formal request that is immediately assigned to students not completing homework, in class assignments, or need extended time understanding a concept. The CSEC Enrichment Sessions is staffed with a tutoring director and two to three tutors all having diverse strengths in Math, English, Reading, and Science. When a student is assigned to the in-school Enrichment Sessions, the parent is notified that the student is being asked to attend and the outcomes of the enrichment session.

Academic Study Lab Course: Study Lab for Credit!  Students are hand selected for this course as a means to improve their academic success in high school.  During this semester students will not only have an opportunity to demonstrate success in their current classes, but also gain study skills that will help each student be successful in school and other pursuits in the future. Study Lab for Credit differs from a traditional study hall class because in addition to having time to complete assignments and study for other classes, students will also engage in activities specifically focused on helping them develop good habits, make good decisions for themselves and ultimately take responsibility for the outcome of their academic pursuits.  Learning skills for success in school is an ongoing process and while we will start good habits this semester, it will be up to each student to continue these habits in the future. Goal- The goal of a study lab at Colorado Springs Early Colleges is to provide an opportunity for students to continue to excel academically outside of their regular classrooms. The study lab at CSEC is designed to not only provide students with a structured, scheduled study/working environment, but it also provides academic interventions for students provided by CSEC teachers. In a traditional study hall, students are assigned to a room for the duration of a class period and often times they are left alone to do what they want. At CSEC, the study labs are designed to allow students to study, read, receive tutoring and work with a CSEC teacher to excel in current courses.

Response to Intervention (RtI): RtI is a systematic way of connecting instructional components that are already in place. It integrates assessment data and resources efficiently to provide more support options for every type of learner. CSEC utilizes the RtI process as proactive approach to identify and intervene early to ensure academic success for every type of learner.

Please Note: While we value students’ lunch period, their academic achievement comes first. Students attending the Enrichment Session during lunch periods will be required to bring lunch with them.

How Parents Can Help: Encourage your child to write assignments in a planner, and check to see if the assignments are completed. Check PowerSchool at least once a week to be sure your child is keeping up with his/her school work and is doing well on tests and quizzes. If you see a problem, contact the teacher right away to find out what kind of support your child needs. Encourage your child to attend the Enrichment sessions or to get help from the teacher.
